T&T Women Open World Cup Qualifying With a Win

Kenwyne Jones gets his first victory as the head coach of the Women’s Senior National Team and it’s a pretty valuable three points.

10-Woman T&T has defeated Nicaragua in Group F action in their opening World Cup Qualifier at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Playing in a 4-3-3 formation, midfielder Asha James was the first to get on the scorecard to give the home team a 1-0 lead in the first half. For the first forty-five minutes, the Jones-led squad enjoyed much of the possession.

T&T seemed to be in some trouble after left-back Kedie Johnson, who was pretty active for much of her time on the pitch, had seen her second yellow and was sent to shower early, much to the fans’ disapproval. For the second period, despite T&T being a player short, the hosts still enjoyed a considerable amount of possession before the captain and makeshift centre forward Karyn ‘Baby’ Forbes doubled the lead and that would be the final goal of the encounter for the home team.

Late in stoppage time Nicaragua pulled one back but it wasn’t enough and T&T now sits second on the table with 3 points, with Guyana topping the table by virtue of goal difference. The women will be in action again on Sunday against Dominica.
